Esther waited until after Jones had excused himself before she turned on the two of us, waving a motherly finger in our direction while the others all burst out laughing. At some point during dinner, Sierra had explained what had happened to Tomas which led to him solemnly extending a hand over the table to shake with Adam while Jones looked on, confused.

“YOU TWO!” She growled, chasing me round the sofa while Adam just sat down, watching us with the most bemused expression.

“I’M INNOCENT!” I yelled back, ducking behind the coffee table.

“Not anymore,” K added with a quirked brow, making Sierra retch while Laurel smothered a giggle in her palm.

“Don’t encourage him!” Esther said while I unsuccessfully tried to navigate a way over Adam’s feet without tripping or stepping on him.

“Come here,” Adam murmured, grabbing me round the waist and pulling me down onto the sofa beside him. “She’s not gonna hurt you,” he assured me, slinging an arm around my shoulders. I couldn’t help but snuggle up a little bit, enjoying the heat radiating from his sturdy frame. Sticking my tongue out at Esther was probably a bit childish, but I’m not winning any awards for maturity any time soon.

“Were you careful, at least?” Esther asked, pinching the bridge of her nose like we were giving her one hell of a headache.

“No, we decided we wanted to try for kids right away,” I replied, deadpan. K laughed so hard I thought they were going to crack a rib.

“Yes, we were safe,” Adam replied, pinching my side as a punishment for sassing his best friend. “Even though both of us have absolutely zero STDs, we used the condoms Jones gave me last year.”

“Ew,” Sierra mumbled, scrunching her perfect little nose. I pretty much agreed with that sentiment – Jones giving someone condoms was just weird on a whole other level, especially if that someone was Adam.

“Why did Jones give you condoms?” I asked him, curiosity peaked.

“Well after the whole Tomas and the nurse fiasco…”

“Hey!” Tomas protested, folding his arms and flicking a strand of hair away from his face in the most petulant way. “It wasn’t a fiasco.”

“It absolutely was,” K reminded him.

“Jones decided that he should prepare us all for, uh, you know, getting intimate with someone because clearly keeping us here in the Tower wasn’t stopping some of us from getting laid,” Adam concluded with a shrug. “Well, it was actually stopping everyone except from Tomas.”

“And now you,” Tomas pointed out with a leer. Sierra retched again from her spot in the kitchen where she was getting a soda.

I glanced around the living room, trying to take in the surreal situation I’d found myself in. Being whisked away by the government after unwillingly taking part in a top-secret superhero creating experiment and spending my days in a gorgeous glass walled prison was one thing, but having an actual boyfriend type person, who wasn’t just gorgeous and sweet and kind, but an actual living and breathing superhero? That was just a little too much to take in.
